BelaHockey and Disney GOALS Team Up

Girls - Disney GOALS

Hockey Line for Girls and Non-Profit Work Together to Encourage More Girls to Try Ice Hockey

South Portland, ME (June 26, 2008) --- BelaHockey, a line of hockey gear and apparel made exclusively for girls, and Disney GOALS, the largest not-for-profit youth diversity ice hockey program in the U.S., announce a collaboration in an effort to increase female participation in ice hockey. BelaHockey will act as a proud sponsor of GOALS Girls, one of the many programs within Disney GOALS that provides girls in low income areas with the opportunity to play ice hockey.

The partnership will be announced today when girls from every Disney GOALS neighborhood face off at Anaheim Ice for a special GOALS Girls ice hockey game. Participants will be presented with custom girls hockey socks developed and produced by BelaHockey.

BelaHockey is an innovative sports company founded by hockey moms Anna Cloutier and Justine Carlisle, as well as women’s hockey legend and Olympic Gold Medalist Cammi Granato. The idea for the company began when young Bela Cloutier expressed her desire to play hockey, but couldn’t find any equipment that made her feel as though she belonged. BelaHockey was created to develop a line exclusively for girls and reinforce the message that hockey is a girl’s sport too. Traditional hockey gear such as socks and sticks were updated with fun graphics and patterns to allow girls to express their personality and style on the ice.

"We are excited about our partnership with Disney GOALS," said BelaHockey co-founder Granato. "We wanted to become involved with a program that encourages girls to try a new sport. Disney GOALS provides girls with the facilities, equipment, and encouragement to participate in ice hockey. We are proud to have them wearing BelaHockey on the ice!"

GOALS Girls is one of many Disney GOALS programs. Approximately 20 percent of enrolled participants in Disney GOALS are females between the ages of 6 and 19, well above the national average of 7 percent. GOALS Girls receive special "girls only" events, field trips, guest speakers and curriculum addressing issues they face.

Largely concentrated in the city of Anaheim, Disney GOALS has served more than 15,000 youth since 1994. Currently some 1,500 youngsters are active in various learning, athletic, and community service programs. GOALS has established neighborhood programs in 14 communities in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Placentia, and San Diego. All programs are targeted in low-income areas and are available free to participating youth.
